SECRETS TO FLAW - less POULTRY MANAGEMENT


Proper poultry management is crucial for maintaining the health, productivity, and profitability of your poultry flock. Most poultry keepers make mistakes in the management of the farms. Before we talk of the FLAW – less poultry management, here are some common mistakes to avoid through effective poultry management:


· Inadequate space along with poor ventilation

· Poor sanitation/biosecurity

· Improper feeding/inefficient nutrition

· Neglecting vaccination regimes

· Poor record keeping

Here are the FLAW–less TIPS that Silverlands suggests for successful poultry farming. Let's grow together.



Tip #1 – F - Feed


To have fewer or no mistakes in feeding make sure that you have the best type of feed that has proven to have all the best nutrients, for a certain flock age. The quantity of feed has to be as advised and we suggest you use Silverlands feed for best results. Our feed is formulated by experts in their field to ensure a well-balanced diet for our chickens. Note that inadequate or imbalanced nutrition can lead to poor growth, less egg production, and overall health.


Tip #2 – L – Light


Make sure to have a proper lighting program for your chicken house for young flocks. Ensure one hour of rest (light off-hour) for broilers and layers at least 2 hours off after every 4 hours light on. Chickens also need sleep and this will help them absorb the nutrients in feed consumed.


Tip #3 – A - Air

Make sure there is no dust and monitor ammonia levels in your poultry house by providing sufficient ventilation. Do not compromise ventilation for temperature. What we mean by this is do not be afraid to leave curtains (if you have one) open at the top for ventilation, especially when using charcoal brooders. This will ensure fresh air enters the house and eliminates the build-up of carbon dioxide. Also overcrowding birds can lead to stress, disease spread, and reduced growth. Required stocking density will differ in different areas, especially in broilers, depending on climate and humidity.


Tip #4 - W - Water

Insufficient access to clean water can lead to dehydration and decreased egg production. Consider having enough drinkers, and clean and portable water, and the settings of your drinkers should match your flock's age. If you are not willing to drink the water you give your chickens, then the water is not clean enough for your chickens. For your chickens to eat enough, they also need to have sufficient water. Please keep in mind that hotter and more humid areas will require you to give your chickens more water than an area that has a milder climate.


Tip #5 – S - Sanitation

Neglecting cleanliness can lead to disease outbreaks and decreased flock health and allowing unauthorized personnel or equipment into the farm can introduce diseases. Make sure to implement strict biosecurity measures to control who enters the farm and regularly monitor for any signs of disease Also regularly clean the feeding equipment, and drinkers to prevent the buildup of pathogens. If you do not adhere to good biosecurity measures, all the vaccines you are administering to your chickens will be useless. Biosecurity is your first line of defense against pathogens.


Proper poultry management requires consistent attention to detail, a focus on prevention, and a willingness to adapt based on the needs of your flock. Regular consultation with experts, such as veterinarians and poultry nutritionists, can significantly contribute to successful poultry farming. But the most useful of them all is to attend the poultry course offered by Silverlands Poultry Training Centre (PTC).
